(Another NYC “branch” of the Tao chain is located in on 9th Avenue in Chelsea at the Maritime Hotel, and two other Tao venues exists in Las Vegas.) A coat check is available upon entry to the restaurant. Tao Uptown is located on East 58th Street (between Madison Avenue and Park Avenue) in the Midtown East/Theatre District of Manhattan. Tao is open Monday through Saturday for lunch, Sunday for brunch, and daily for dinner. We booked a table using the Open Table reservation system, and the hostess seated us immediately upon arrival despite the crowded restaurant. We checked our Open Table app to find nearby restaurants with availability, and Tao seemed to fit our needs – it had a table available, it was located nearby, and we were familiar with the restaurant name. We had planned to eat farther uptown at a restaurant where we had a gift card, but we realized en route to that restaurant that we did not have the card with us, so we made an alternate plan. It was amazing.My spouse and I dined for lunch at Tao Uptown on a Saturday afternoon in late December 2014. Definitely not an 'every day' restaurant, but somewhere you would go with your girlfriends for a birthday, your family for a special occasion or celebration, or somewhere you would take your 'special someone' on a date. We had wine, cocktails, and the 3 course tasting menu and it came to about $145 per person. Be prepared to pay for the whole experience, though it probably wasn't as bad as we were expecting. The atmosphere was great too, a DJ and live percussionist (playing a mix of funky house music/remixed pop etc.) Perhaps not the most 'intimate' experience as you were not able to hear people from across the table at times, but it was definitely not an issue for our table, we liked the idea of enjoying music while we ate.
We had 3 courses and by the end we were stuffed to the brim, but we just couldn't help ourselves, we had to taste everything as it was all so good. And the food did not disappoint, it was absolutely spectacular! There was options to suit every palette, and the portions were huge (my sister thought the appetizers were the main course!). Once sat, out waiter was extremely attentive and recommended the tasting platter, which we went with. Our reservation was for 10pm and we actually got sat at around 10:20, so there was a little delay, but we just went to the upstairs bar and had a drink while we waited. Also, be advised that they will not seat you until your entire party is there, they give you a 15-minute grace period and I'm guessing that if everyone is not there by then, you lose your table.
Our reservation was initially for a total of 8, but the day before, I called them to request to add a 9th person, however they could not accommodate this request at the original time, so we had to be moved to a much later time slot, which was a bit disappointing. Be advised that this place will fill up fast so you should book well in advance (they allow you to reserve up to a month in advance). I went here for a special occasion with 8 of my family members.
